Lions Back on winning Track with Sweep of Felician

The Lincoln University women's volleyball team snapped a six game losing streak with a 3-0 non-conference win over Felician College Friday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The Lions improve to 6-21 overall.  Felician falls to 0-26. Lincoln won the first set 28-26 and then took the next two 25-22 and 25-23.

Mariah Russell (St Louis Mo./Maplewood Richmond Heights) led all players with 16 kills.  Atarah Lindsey (Detroit, Mich./Romulus High School) recorded a double-double, her third of the season, notching 11 kills and 11 digs.   Shanna king had 35 assists setting up the Lincoln offense.   Tierra Russaw (Westland, Mich./Summit Academy) led the Lions with 19 digs.  Aundrea Hall (San Antonio, Texas/Naples HS (Italy)) had three service aces.

In the opening set, the Lions jumped out to an early lead, scoring four of the first five points.  Felician came back to take a 14-13 lead midway through the match. Lincoln retook the lead with three straight points, 16-14 while the Golden falcons kept it close the rest of the way.    A Gecinda Turner (West Philadelphia, PA/Academy Park) kill opened up a three-point lead at 21-18 but Felician came back with three straight points of their own to even the score again a 21-21.  Russell followed with a pair of kills and Turner added another to give the Lions a 24-21 lead but again Felician would not be daunted and came back and tied the set at 24-24.  The two teams exchanged points and Lindsey's kill put Lincoln up 27-26.  The Lions then won the set, 28-26 via an attack error by the Golden Falcons.

Felician showed improved play in the second set, battling back from an early two-point deficit to take a 15-11 lead and later expanded that to 17-12.  The Lions scored the next six points to retake the lead 18-17, highlighted by a pair of aces from Hall along with kills from Lindsey and Corian Campbell (Newark, NJ/No. 13th HS).  Lincoln never trailed the rest of the way and scored the final three points of the set to go up 2-0 in the match.

The two teams battled in the third set with neither team leading by more than two points until Lindsey recorded a kills to put the Lions up 15-12.  Her kill started a 7-2 run that push  Lincoln's lead to 21-14 before the Golden Falcons came back with four straight points of their own to close the gap to 21-18. Four volleys later, Lincoln had the lead back up to four 24-20 and was serving for the match.  Felician scored the next three points to pull within one 24-23 before Russell closed the match out with her final kill of the night.

Paulina Calero led Felician with 12 kills.  Charlotte Greek had 31 assists and Amanda Coccia recorded a match –high 28 digs for the Golden Falcons.
