Day One Results
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Competing at the 116th Penn Relays, LU's women's 4x400-meter relay team nearly broke a school record with a 3:45.73, just off the 3:45.05 set in 2006.
The ecstatic group annihilated its best performance on the season, a 3:52.01 at the Raleigh Relays. The team, consisting of Antonia Jones (Philadelphia, PA, Northeast), Esha Wannamaker (Wilmington, DE, Glasgow) Kristina Rembert (Bronx, NY, Cathedral) and Keishana LaRose (Brooklyn, NY), finished second in the sixth heat behind N.C. Central, which posted a 3:45.02.
Overall, LU placed 29th, just outside of the top 24 teams, which would have guaranteed the squad a spot in the College Final. However, the time qualifies the ladies for the second alternate spot in the more prestigious ECAC championships, held Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
That did not spoil the day for Antonia Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast), who provided LU's fastest split with a 54.1, a senior who found herself nostalgic in her final weekend at the famed Franklin Field.
The group credited its time for the heightened competition and the excitement of the day.
Considering what had just transpired, the performance was even more remarkable. Inclement weather nearly kept LU off the track. During the fifth heat, lightning forced officials to postpone action for a half hour with the Lady Lions next up to race.
Action continues Friday and Saturday.
