COLLEGEVILLE, PA (December 6, 2008) – The Lincoln University women's indoor track team placed eighth overall out of 21 teams that competed in the Ursinus Indoor Track Classic on Saturday. (RESULTS to follow)
Jordean Matthews (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) led the day off for the women on the runway and sandpit for the long jump. Surrounded by what seemed to be organized chaos of athletes finding their way around the recreation center at Ursinus College to get to their specific event, or to find their team, Matthews stood patiently waiting, stretching and planning her jumps. With a sore quadriceps and a team rooting her on, Jordean came in fourth place out of 35 jumpers with a 16 feet, 10.50 inch jump.
The second event for the Lady Lions was the 55 meter dash. The lone sprinter for Lincoln was Antonia Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) who ran solid with a 7.75 second race falling just two seconds out of the final heat.
Following the shorter distances was the 400 meter dash which is two times around the indoor track. Lincoln went right back to form with Alisha McKeithan (Chester, PA/Strath Haven) taking first place with the only time under one minute out of 39 runners with a 59.68 second run. Donneisha Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Harold S. Vincent) came in sixth place for the Lady Lions running a 1 minute, 1.2 second race. Kristina Rembert (Bronx, NY/Cathedral) followed with a 1minute, 2.05 second race to place in the top and Kimmy Nurse came in the top 20 in 19th place with a 1.06 race.
The final race for the women, after a long lapse of time between races, was the 4x400 meter relay. The Lady Lions came out with first place running a solid race from beginning to end, never losing the lead once and beating the competition by over two seconds of time. The team of McKeithan, Jones, Rembert, and Smith each ran a solid race and put a number of body lengths between them and their opponents who came in second in their heat and third overall in Cabrini College.
With 28 points and an eighth place finish, the Lady Lions will look to revamp and get back to the top of the standings as they travel to Bucknell University on January 10 for their next competition.
