SAAC forum "EAT RIGHT, GET RIGHT", a big hit

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA (October 31, 2008)- The Lincoln University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held a “EAT RIGHT, GET RIGHT” forum featuring Jeanie Subach, a licensed dietitian and sports nutritionist from NovaCare Rehabilitation on Monday October 27, 2008.

Subach is the sports nutritionist for the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia 76ers. She is also a professor at West Chester University and works with the Saint Joseph's University men's basketball team.

Subach explained how many people may not realize it but they are on a “brown and yellow” diet where most of the foods they eat like chicken, corn, bread, fries, etc, are of those colors. She handed out charts and metaphorically explained healthy eating but using football terms instead of textbook terms to explains which foods are healthier.

“I really enjoyed the forum and it was interesting,” said Donneisha Smith, a senior volleyball player and treasurer for SAAC. “I learn a lot about that stuff in my nutrition class and I know it's important for others to know these things as well.”

SAAC members thought the forum was necessary for not only the student-athletes but the whole campus in general. As the students enter into Lincoln University one lasting quotes they remember is the “freshman 15.” The quote explains how many students in the first year of college gain 15 pounds or more.

“I never really believed in the freshman 15, but that was just based on my individual analysis,” said Smith. “I always thought of it to be a myth.”

SAAC is a committee made up of a student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The “EAT RIGHT, GET RIGHT” forum was one of many events the committee held this past semester. Next weekend SAAC will be volunteering at Camp Joy, a camp for people with special needs and developmental disabilities located in Schwenksville, PA.
